Termites

The insect order Isoptera consists entirely of termites. There are more than 2,000 species worldwide, some of which can be found in all but the coldest climates.

In nature, termites are considered beneficial since they help to convert dead wood and other cellulose material to usable soil nutrients. Conflict with humans arises only when we use wood, the normal food supply of the termite, in settings where termites naturally occur.
Termites found in France are generally grouped into wo categories: drywood, and subterranean. Members of the first group generally are found outside the constructions and their social organisation seems lees structured. The number of members in a colony is also limited to a small number. So far,they are not considered as a menace for buildings. Thus, termite problem is basically caused by subterranean termites.

Biology

Termites live in true social colonies with a division of labor among the different types of individuals. These different types, called castes, usually consist of primary reproductives, soldiers, and workers. Often secondary reproductives are present.
